How Much Does Therapy Cost?

My goal is to be able to determine or estimate your cost before our first appointment so you can make an informed decision about affordability. The final cost for therapy is dependent on the answer to several questions:

  • Do you plan to use insurance?
  • Does your plan have mental health benefits?
  • Is your therapist in-network or out-of-network?
  • What is the copay amount or coinsurance percentage for your plan?
  • Do you have to pay a deductible before you are able to use your benefits?
  • How much have you paid on any deductible for the current insurance year?
  • What is the “out of pocket maximum” amount for your plan?
  • What is your insurance’s reimbursement rate for therapy services?

Many of these questions may be answerable during our first phone call with some basic information about your insurance. Other answers may require a phone call to your insurance. This is always advisable as understanding your insurance benefits reduces the chance of a financial surprise should therapy cost more than you expected.

If you do not plan to use insurance and will be paying out of pocket, my full fees are:

  • $100-$200 for therapy sessions depending on type, length of service, and insurance status.
  • Time spent writing letters or preparing other documents on your behalf: $45/per 15-minutes.

Payment for services is due at the beginning of each appointment. Valid forms of payment include credit card, cash, FSA (Flexible Spending Account) card, or HSA (Health Savings Account) card.

Using Insurance

Insurance policies help many people gain access to services they may otherwise have difficulty affording. This can be a great benefit. There are also some costs to using your insurance. Here are some possible disadvantages to using insurance:

  • Some insurance plans limit the number of sessions allowed
  • A requirement to be assigned a mental health diagnosis in order to use these benefits
  • Disclosure of your private health information (PHI)
  • Limitation on available providers
  • Complex rules of use
  • Possible rejection of claims causing sudden financial liability for services that were anticipated to be covered

In-Network Coverage

I am an in-network provider for the follow insurance companies:

  • PacificSource (commercial)
  • PacificSource (Oregon Health Plan/Community Solutions)
  • First Choice Health

Out-of-Network (OON) Coverage

Many insurance providers include coverage for services provided by professionals not contracted with their company. This allows more freedom to choose the provider you prefer to use. I am happy to help you bill for out-of-network benefits.

Here are the steps we would go through together to determine the appropriate fee for you at time of service:

1) You and I would verify your out-of-network benefits with your insurance company.

2) With that information I will estimate your approximate financial responsibility and you will pay that at your first session.

3) I bill your insurance company for the remainder of the amount not paid.

4) Once your insurance company pays the amount allotted by your contract with them, we will readjust your fee to align correctly with information.

5) A small balance may be owed to one of us for previous sessions if the estimate was incorrect.
